From Thin To Thick

What do you do to get your hair so long and thick? This is one of my most asked questions. Before I implemented the steps I’m sharing with you today, my hair was thinning and would not grow! It was defeating and frustrating. I’m so excited to tell you about my hair transformation and growth secrets to thick and healthy hair after 50.

Targeted Supplements

I’m a huge fan of supplements. I have taken a handful of various specialized vitamins for years now. If I go a couple of days without taking them, I notice a difference in energy, hair loss, nail strength, and at my age, hot flashes! Below are the products that have made the cut over the years of trial and error.

Nutafol

I started taking Nutafol about five months ago. I’m so glad I did because, at the time, I was shedding hair like crazy because of hormonal imbalance. I give this product more credit than any other for my hair growing so long lately. My hair has never been as long and thick as it is now.

There is science behind this brand that makes it so effective. You have the choice of going onto their site and taking a simple quiz to get the recommended supplement, or you can just order it here. The product I use is Nutafol Woman’s Balance. This formula gets to the root of my problem by adding in needed supplements for my peri-menopausal symptoms.

There is also a Men’s formula.

Vital Proteins

I was late to the game taking collagen powder. I honestly wasn’t sure it would work.  However, I finally gave in to the hype, and I’m so happy I did! Since I’ve started adding a scoop of this powder to my morning protein shakes over two years ago, I’ve noticed the following results.

  1. Joints/knees do not ache or give my problems as they did before.
  2. My nails are stronger.
  3. Hair is thicker and longer.

Biotin

I’ve taken a 10,000 mcg biotin supplement for multiple years. Taking this seems to help my nails more than my hair. At least that’s what I notice breaks more when I run out and stop taking it.

Protein Shake

Hair is made out of a protein called keratin. This protein provides structure to your hair, giving it its shape and strength. When we do not get enough protein in our diet, our hair health can’t help but suffer. Making sure your getting enough protein in your diet as you age is so important. My morning vegan protein shake has been a staple breakfast for me since I gave up gluten and eggs 12 years ago.  I also mix this powder into my shake to add my daily greens.

Hair Products

I can’t stress enough how important it is to be using quality hair products to obtain thick and healthy hair.

Olaplex 3, 4 & 5

If you haven’t heard of the brand, Olaplex by now, I’m about to change your hair game! Olaplex #3 is a cream the rebuilds your hair from the inside, repairing the damage done from salon processing. I sleep in #3 about once a month. I also apply this lotion to my dry hair. Especially when I know, I’m going to be washing it soon. I’ll slather it on my ends and put it up in a bun. Leaving it in all day until I wash it.

#4 and #5 are the shampoo and conditioner. I love these products, and they make a massive difference in softness and my healthy hair. If you want to try out this brand, here is a travel kit with small sizes for $25.00.

Sisley

If you follow my blog, you know I’m all about Sisley products. This brand had been practicing clean herbal beauty for over 100 years. It’s a family-owned company that had some of the most expensive and most effective products on the market.

You can read my full review of Sisley hair products here. The two products that make the most significant difference in my hair are the shampoo and hair oil. Both are pricey, but the shampoo is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way, and the oil has such a large amount in the bottle that it will last for years. I’ve never used anything like this shampoo. My hair literally felt light as air but with a bouncy volume that started at the roots. My hair color is also less brassy when I use this. The hair oil has so many fabulous oils to nourish your hair! I apply two pumps to wet hair, starting at the roots, and when I finish styling it, I use two pumps again. I, however, have incredibly thick hair. Start with one drop and see how that works first.

If this price point is more that you want to spend on haircare, I highly recommend the Prose system. You will again take a quiz online and receive a customized hair care system. They take into account, age, environment, hair-loss, it’s a very detailed questionnaire to get you the best herbal based hair system.

DryBar

I’ve used DryBar products for years, and I love getting blowouts at the salons! Some of my favorite products are The Chaser, for adding shine and separation after I style my hair and  Sparkling Soda. This curling rod is the only hot tool I use.

I recently started using the Blonde Ale line and love what it does for my bleached ends. Especially now, with hair appointments being so far between. This purple shampoo and conditioner are must-haves if you have blonde hair. The mask and powder have even more of an impact on brightening up blonde hair and getting rid of brassiness.

I alternated between these quality products depending on what my hair needs at the time.

What are your go-to hair products do you love for thick and healthy hair? I’d love to hear in the comments!
