Our New Home

If you are a follower of mine, you know I recently moved. We have been remodeling our charming farmhouse style house. It is in a dream location, close to Lake Austin and all of the restaurants and events downtown. Which we thoroughly enjoyed for about four months before quarantine went into place.

We were excited about downsizing and cut our square footage in about half, and the land went from 2 acres to less than 1/2!  The smaller size is so much more manageable and gives us a much closer feeling as a family. The boys are just down the hall instead of out of ear range upstairs.

The interior of the house was beautiful but needed a bit of updating. We have completely changed out the dark wood flooring for light oak, updated lighting, opened up small doorways, and smooth textured every wall and ceiling in the house.

Guest Bathroom Remodel

The guest bathroom was a big project. The room needed to be completely gutted. I knew I wanted the design to be unique and continue the authentic vintage charm the home has.

However, I had no idea where to start. Thankfully I ran across the design firm Light & Dwell. I was thrilled to see they offered a virtual design service. You can read more about their services here.

Working with them was so easy! They made the bathroom design come together like I never could. Mixing metals, choosing the perfect vanity, and tile placement were all done virtually. They hit it out of the park, and I couldn’t be happier with the new space.

As you can see, the previous space was dark and dated. Now the new bathroom is light and bright but in a charming way that seamlessly integrated with our 1960’s home.

We couldn’t be happier and are looking forward to working on other rooms in the home with Light & Dwell.

Grocery Shopping Tips To Stay Safe

While the world is sheltering in place, the one thing we all will need to do is leave the house to get is food. When you do have to leave your home, I’m very sure staying safe and healthy is at the front of your thoughts.  I’ve gathered some tips and resources below to help you do just that when your grocery shopping.

Choose Your Store Wisely

You want a grocery store that has implemented the recommended COVID-19 safeguards for customers and employees. For me, that store is hands-down H-E-B here in Texas.

Texas grocery chain H-E-B revealed its stores have been preparing for COVID-19 for months. Stores and carts are deep cleaned every day, and partners are given daily training and education on elevated sanitation protocols. They are on top of social distancing, keeping people at recommended 6′.  Associates are there to help and guide you to open check out stands. Checkstand partitions are in place to offer a buffer between the cashier and the customer.

H-E-B has uniquely been able to stay stocked, manage social distancing, and even donate $3 million to help with novel coronavirus aid, thanks to a year-round, full-time emergency preparedness staff.

Today I went to the grocery store and was able to buy toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, and bottled water with no problem. The shelves were by no means full, but the was an adequate supply for the demand.

It’s all a little unsettling that we have to take these measures. I do feel at ease, knowing, and seeing all of the safety protocols in place! Now for your side of things to do.

Steps To Take At The Store

  1. Go to the grocery store right when it opens or before. You’ll find more items stocked, have to be around fewer people, and the store will be freshly sanitized!
  2. Go into the store with sanitized/washed hands or wear fresh gloves.
  3. Keep your wet sanitizer wipe with you. Most likely, there will be an option to take one when you enter the store, but just in case. Give the cart a little extra cleaning on the handle.
  4. Keep your phone in your pocket. There is no need to expose it to any germs.
  5. Since your phone is safely away, you’ll need to write out your grocery list on paper. Try to organize your list by the department—listing all the fresh foods together, dairy, frozen, and such. This way, you will spend less time in the store and won’t need to double back for forgotten items. Doing this also will save you from going down aisles you do not need to. Get in and get out as quickly as possible.
  6. At the checkout counter, if you do not have gloves on, use your knuckle instead of your fingertip. If you still have your wipe, you can cover your finger with that too.
  7. I like to bring my own bags. ( love this washable set of four) I know where they have been, and I have already sanitized them at home, and more items always fit into these larger bags than plastic or paper bags. You will have less to pack into your car and on your counter when you get home, if you use your bags.

When You Get Home

  1. Bring in the bags and set in and set them in one place on your counter.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly, change your clothes if you feel the need.
  3. Go back outside and spray your car down with disinfectant where the bags were, your steering wheel, shifter, blinker, seat-belt.
  4. Take everything out of your bags and place in one spot, sanitize your bags for your next trip.
  5. As you put items away, wipe them with sanitizer. For fruit and veggies, wash them with soap.
  6. Sanitize your counter where the food and bags where.

My Staycation At ARRIVE hotel

My husband and I both have hectic work lives making it hard to get away. He can get called out of town for work last minute, making it hard to plan ahead to take advantage of lower airline rates. Childcare is also a challenge without family in town for couples trips. However, we started taking a spur of the moment staycations, and that has been a game-changer! So when The ARRIVE hotel reached out to me to come to stay at there new hotel on the east side of Austin, I knew it would be a great fit!

Checking In

Refreshingly, everything is done a little differently here. First, there is not a huge hotel lobby. The check-in desk is discretely located to the side of their gorgeous restaurant, Vixon’s Wedding. I was pleased to be offered locally made waters and cocktails (some of my current favorites)  from vintage ice-chest.  After they give you your keys you are on a text basis for communication the rest of your stay. If you need anything at all, charger cube, ice, towels, valet, you just text your needs and they make it happen.

The Room

We were given the Kinda Suite room. The modern/vintage decor was beyond cute! Think, concrete ceiling, luxe wallpaper, natural woods, and a crisp modern tiled bathroom. The vintage touches, such as the retro Bluetooth radio, mini-fridge, and artwork, were perfection.

I loved the conveniences the room had like Apple TV so that you can stream your shows, and the cute coffee table books to browse.  It really was all about the natural lighting though! This room had multiple floor to ceiling windows that lit up the space beautifully!

This is also a dog-friendly hotel, so you have the option to bring your pup! Austin is such a dog-loving city, and I do not believe there is a patio in town that dogs are not welcome.

 

Restaurants & Cocktail Bars

ARRIVE is not only a fabulous place to stay, but the restaurant and bars attached to it are also some of the best in Austin! I had been to Vixen’s Wedding before I stayed here for drinks, so I knew the decor and vibe were next level amazing.  However, I hadn’t eaten there before. We had the tasting menu which is multiple courses of chefs choice appetizers, entrees, and a dessert. The food is Goan Portuguese inspired. Everything was so good, but the crudo, fried green tomatoes, bread, and duck stood out for me!

After dinner, we went up to The Gin Bar to have specialty cocktails on the open-air patio. Heaters and are there for warmth in the colder months. In addition to the cozy seating areas around gas fireplaces, there is bar seating overlooking the view and Lefty’s Brick Bar. 

Lefty’s Brick Bar is definitely a place we love to visit. There is a cute seating area inside with the bar and kitchen but it’s mostly all outside with a rock covered ground, picnic tables, and a fun New Orleans vibe. It is also very dog-friendly, and Austinites know it and love it!

  1. Plan something special. A dinner reservation to somewhere you’ve never been, a local event or concert. Check out the city magazine to see what’s going on. If you’re in Austin, this link will give you the low down.
  2. Bring your chic loungewear, including slippers, silk robe, cozy joggers.
  3. Even the best resorts can have windows that are too bright and walls too thin, so don’t forget an eye mask and earplugs if you’re sensitive to light and sound when you sleep.

A new decade is upon us, and with it, I’m feeling a sense of freshness and positive energy. These first few weeks of the new year are filled with resolutions and goals. So what can you do to have a happier & healthier 2020?

1. START A HYDRATION PLAN

You probably know this, but water is good for you, like really good for you! Your body is made up of 60% water, making water fundamental to our wellness. Not drinking enough water daily will lead to mild dehydration. I have to admit I am guilty of not drinking enough water. It seems like, finding 7-10 days to block out over summer vacation without having to worry kids is not an easy task. The easy part is finding a fantastic destination resort that is still within a 2-hour drive from my house in Austin! When you stay closer to home, childcare is more accessible. Also, by taking out the expense of your travel, going more often is more doable!

For most of us, our goal on an adult vacation is to relax and reconnect with each other as a couple. Honestly, sometimes traveling long-distance to very foreign places can end up causing more stress than relaxation. So it’s no surprise that staycations have surged in popularity all over the country recently! With fabulous resorts being more common now, heading to a close retreat is becoming the new chic getaway!

Orangetheory Fitness Transformation Challenge

I just finished up the Orangetheory Transformation Challenge! This challenge is eight weeks long. As I mentioned in this past post, I would update you on what I thought of the challenge. Let me start by saying I have never been on a “diet,” entered a fitness challenge or anything like that. I workout and eat right in my everyday life, so I thought that was enough. However, joining the challenge gave me the motivation to go work out on days I really didn’t want to and say no to empty calories such as candy at the movies, which is totally my weakness!

Orangetheory runs this challenge is done once a year there are two winners. One female and one male that will win $5,000.00 each for the most weight lost!  #motivation

What is involved in this challenge?

Workouts

As part of the Orangetheory challenge and to be eligible to win the prize money, you are required to work out three days a week for 6 out of the eight weeks. There will be a large chart there for you to mark the days you attend class.

Diet

You will also be required to keep a food log. I was so not looking forward to this at all, but it turned out to be my favorite part! There is, of course, an app for that. The app makes it super easy. You start by inputting your stats, including weight, height and such. Then you add your goal weight. It will tell you what your daily calorie goal needs to be to get to your ideal weight. You can scan bar codes, add food in manually and also choose repeat foods you eat daily. I’m a creature of habit, so this feature was handy to me. It was so interesting to keep track of calories and very motivating!

Coaching

You will be assigned an Orangetheory coach that will be available to you by email for any of your fitness questions. They can also help you with suggesting diet changes. Your food log will need to be turned into them weekly.


If you are a follower of mine you already know I’m a long time fan of Orangetheory. However, entering this challenge has been eye-opening. I loved how motivating it was to be a part of this! I highly recommend it!

If you follow me on social media, you know how much I’m at Orangetheory. I’ve been going 3-4 times a week for over a year and never get bored of it! This high-intensity workout complement my LaGree and Pilates toning workouts perfectly!

So what is Orangetheory?

Orangetheory is a one-hour workout that focuses on training, endurance, strength, and power. It is a heart rate based interval training. They are known for the heart rate monitor that is either worn on your wrist, chest or arm. These options are entirely your personal preference. There is a cost difference between the options. I have found the chest monitor works best for me because I do not have to remember to charge it.

You will see there are several screens around the room. Everyone will have a separate personal box that will state in real time what your name is, calorie burn, heart rate, and splat points are. Your box will also be a color, either grey, blue, green, orange or red. These colors all represent a different heart rate zone.

The theory behind Orangetheory is that you want to spend 12 minutes or more in the orange or red zone. When you do this for one minute, you earn a splat point.

Why do you want splat points?

When you earn a splat point, you are using 85% or more of your heart rate capacity, and you will be burning more calories throughout the day.

What do you do in class?

There are three main areas to workout in, treadmill, row, and floor. There are also a couple of spin bikes and an elliptical to substitute either row or treadmill. I usually use the spin bike instead of a rower because I enjoy it more and therefore I work harder at it.

The treadmills have flex step technology. I can completely notice a difference between the gym that I hear people pounding on and the ones at Orangetheory. The flex step is softer on your joints and more bouncy. However, I opt to powerwalk instead of run because of my knees.

Every class will be different. I have been attending classes for over a year and cannot remember two that were alike. Some days you might be on the treadmill for half the class, and another day you might be 10 minutes treadmill, 10 minutes rower and 10 min floor for the whole hour. The one thing you can count on is you will always have a new workout to look forward to!

The floor exercises are a favorite of mine! Here the different equipment used is a boso ball, ab dollies, weights, TRX, and mat work. The exercise options are endless and changed daily.

Power metrics such as jumping, hoping and such can always be altered to fit your needs.

Do I have to get in shape before I start?

There will be people attending classes that are pregnant, injured and out of shape doing the workout. Whatever your level is know that you are the one in charge of how hard you push yourself and what your body can handle. So not you do not have to be in shape before you start at all.

Everyone is at an individual pace, and there is no judgment at Orange Theory ever! The workout space is somewhat dark, music is turned up, and your motivating coach will be on the mic directing everyone what to do. Most people get into a zone in this fast-paced environment and focus on their workout and not yours.

After every class, you will get an email with a chart detailing how many calories you burnt and your splat point totals. This information is also available on the OT app for your phone.

What to know before your first class.

For your first class arrive 30 minutes early. You will need to sign paperwork, get your heart rate monitor. The coach will also take you inside the workout space to go over everything you need to know such as how to read the OT heart rate screen, correctly row and use the equipment.

I honestly love Orangetheory because of the changes I’ve seen in my body and well being. I thought I was working out as hard asl I could though… until I started the Orangetheory challenge! This has pushed me to limits I didn’t even think about pushing myself too!
